Celebrity Successes - Part 1

Hey everyone. I hope you’re all doing great!

I thought I’d focus today's post on celebrities.

Not just any old celebrities, though. In particular, celebrities who kickstarted their major success with apprenticeships.

Yes, you heard right! Even I was surprised to hear that some of the most successful people in the world started their working life as apprentices. Fingers crossed I’ll hop on the same road.

It’s a nice reminder to know that with hard work, determination and a focused mindset, you can achieve anything.

*Although some of these apprentices didn’t continue on the distinct career paths they started off following, it’s unquestionable that their apprenticeships would have allowed them to gain vital experience and workplace skills that, undeniably, would have contributed to their success stories.

Let me tell you about them! You may find yourself surprised.

  • Laurence Graff

The success of Laurence Graff really is astounding. He founded the jewellery company ‘Graff Diamonds’, which has an overall net worth of an estimated whopping 3 billion. This makes Graff one of the most successful apprentices of all time.

He started his apprenticeship in jewellery making at the young age of 15 in London, learning the basics in the early 1950s. Soon after, he decided to use the skills he’d acquired whilst apprenticing and sold his solo designs to jewellers all around the UK.

He quotes “I sat down as a proper apprentice, learning how to make jewellery", and remembers that he began to ‘build up.’

Fast forward a few years, he had set up his own brand and had been involved in business with some of the richest people on the planet… something he’d soon become!

60+ years later in the industry, the outcome of this mans work is unbelievable, and he is known as one of the most famous former apprentices in the country.

  • Elvis Presley

A celebrity apprentice who I was really taken aback by was none other than the King of Rock! Although, his apprenticeship wasn’t in pelvis dancing, unfortunately.

Before his huge success in singing, Elvis was, believe it or not, an apprentice electrician in the 1950’s, so he could ‘earn and learn’ whilst trying to get his big break in music.

However, within 6 months, his popularity absolutely took off, and he would go on to become one of the most famous singers of all time, estimated to be worth around 300 million USD.

The entertainer joked about his unfinished electrical apprenticeship, explaining ‘I suppose I got wired up the wrong way somewhere along the line.’

  • Stella McCartney

Stella McCartney is a widely known figure in the fashion industry. The designer began her career with a tailoring apprenticeship at a London tailors whilst also studying as a fashion student.

Having a famous family wasn’t stopping this lady from gaining an independent name and success!

Her apprenticeship allowed her to learn the tricks of the trade, and she picked up skills which lead her to open her first independent boutique in London.

After soaring up, up and up, she is now one of the world’s most renowned fashion designers and has an estimated net worth of 75 million pounds. She even designed the Team GB clothing for the 2012 olympics; a blue Union jack flag as the centrepiece for the official kit.

  • Henry Ford

The name ‘Ford’ generally reminds most people of their first car - yep, the Ford Fiesta is entirely linked to Henry Ford!

From an early age, Ford showed an interest in ‘all things mechanical’ - he certainly started young, and by the age of 12, was spending most of his time in a small machine shop, which he had equipped on his own.

He kickstarted his real career as an apprentice machinist, and the success of how the Ford business has grown since then is colossal.

His company, Ford Motors, is worth an estimated 200 billion today.

In his machinist apprenticeship, Ford learnt the basics of engineering, and went on to invent the first affordable automobile company in America.

So, there we have it - four celebrity names, four unbelievable success stories… all stemming from apprenticeships.

I hope you enjoyed this post; keep an eye out for a part 2, maybe even a part 3…
